About UsA Local Excavating Crew, Not a Call Center
Big Rapids Excavating is a locally operated dirt-work outfit serving Big Rapids and the communities around it. Here's how we work and why people keep our number.
Dirt Work Is Local Work
Excavating isn't a business you can do well from a distance. The ground around Big Rapids has its own personality — fast-draining sandy outwash through most of the county, heavier loam pockets out toward Remus and Barryton, high water tables around the lakes, and glacial boulders wherever they feel like showing up. Roads post spring weight restrictions on their own schedules. The health department, the road commission, and the township building departments each have their own way of doing things.
We work in this ground and with these offices all the time. That's the whole advantage of hiring local: when we quote a septic system in Rodney or a basement dig in Canadian Lakes, the number already reflects the soil, the access, the hauling distance, and the permit path — so it doesn't grow later.
We're not a franchise, a broker, or a national call center that resells your job to whoever bids lowest. When you call, you talk to the people who will actually put steel in your dirt.
The Rules We Run By
- Quote the Real JobWe walk the site before we price it. The estimate covers what the work actually takes — no lowball number that doubles once the machine is on your property.
- Do It in the Right OrderMISS DIG locates, permits, inspections, then dirt. Skipping steps is how projects get red-tagged and how budgets die.
- Protect What StaysLawns, trees you're keeping, existing drives, and neighboring property get planned around, not driven over.
- Finish the SiteThe job isn't done when the digging stops. Grades shed water, topsoil goes back, and the site is left clean enough to seed.
- Tell the TruthIf a pond won't hold water on your soil or a driveway shortcut will fail by spring, we say so — even when it costs us the job.
The Right Machine for Each Job
We size the equipment to the project — excavators and dozers for the big pushes, compact machines for tight lots and finish work — so you're not paying big-iron rates for a small dig, or watching an undersized machine grind through a big one.

Learn MoreHomeowners, Builders & Property Owners
Our work splits about evenly between three kinds of customers. Homeowners building, fixing, or improving — a new septic system, a driveway that survives spring, a wet yard finally drained. Builders and contractors who need a dirt sub that hits grade and hits dates, from Stanwood to Reed City. And property owners and investors — including the rental-property owners around Ferris State University — who need work done cleanly, on schedule, and with tenants still living there.
Wherever you fit, the process is the same: a phone call, a site walk, a written number, and work that matches it.
What We Won't Do
- We won't quote your job sight-unseen and "adjust" it later.
- We won't skip MISS DIG, inspections, or permits to save a week.
- We won't bury demolition debris on your property — it's illegal and it wrecks the ground for whatever comes next.
- We won't install a system or a driveway we know will fail, even if it's what was asked for. We'll explain the problem and price the right fix.
- We won't leave your site looking like a battlefield. Cleanup and final grade are part of the job, not an upsell.
